Rembrandt van Rijn was born and lived in Leiden from 1606 to 1631, overlapping with the presence of members of the exiled English Separatist congregation who settled in the city from 1608 until departing for America in 1620. This surprising juxtaposition – Rembrandt as a boy walking the same streets as William Brewster, William Bradford, Edward Winslow, Isaac Allerton, and other early Plymouth colonists – frames a deeper look at the life of one of the world’s greatest visual artists with visiting lecturer Jane E Choy-Thurlow of Leiden, The Netherlands.

Rembrandt is considered by many to be Holland’s greatest artist and the equal of Mozart, Shakespeare and Michelangelo. Unlike van Gogh, the other great Dutch artist, Rembrandt did not leave much written material explaining his views on art but he left a unique visual autobiography in his self- portraits which he created from the age of 20 to 63, the year of his death. Art educator Jane E Choy-Thurlow illuminates the artist’s self-portraits as a thread through his life and, with his other masterpieces, explores Rembrandt’s life and what, why, and how he painted.

Our distinguisher speaker is a longtime lecturer and docent at the Mauritshuis, Prince William V gallery and Huygens Museum Hofwijck in The Hague, The Netherlands. She participated in many exhibitions at the Mauritshuis, including the legendary Johannes Vermeer exhibit, Rembrandt by Himself, and Holbein, Portraitist of the Renaissance. Originally from the USA, Jane received her BSc from Salem State University, USA, gained a further qualification at Trinity College Dublin and continued her art history studies at Leiden University. She is an accredited Arts Society lecturer and a former Chairman of Mainland Europe AS Area. In 2018, Jane was named a Knight in the Order of Oranje Nassau by the Dutch King Willem Alexander of Orange in recognition for her knowledge and work in the arts.
