FREE TO THE PUBLIC DAY, 11am – 3pm
Pilgrim Hall in downtown Plymouth, MA invites the public to visit for free on Sunday, June 28th to celebrate the completion of a major restoration of the historic museum building. The museum’s original 1824 Main Hall and 1905 Library wing were restored with the support of a $3.2 million Town of Plymouth Community Preservation grant and many other contributors. The 200-year-old building is now water-tight and enjoys new climate control and museum lighting systems that have improved the visitor experience and the care of the Museum’s significant American collections.
The “Light the Way” restoration project included the conservation of two monumental history paintings in the collection. Charles Lucy’s The Departure of the Pilgrims from Delfthaven and Edgar Parker’s Embarkation of the Pilgrims have been fully conserved with the support of the Town of Plymouth Promotions Fund and many other contributors, and are on display in the restored original 1824 Main Hall gallery.
The June 28th event includes a special public showing of selected documents in the collection dating to the period of the American Revolution, including a signed letter by John Hancock to his wife Dolly, written while serving as Massachusetts representative to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1778.
