X_S_salt.GIF (2596 bytes) Standing Salt
$74.00

This is a reproduction of a Pilgrim Hall artifact.  The original standing salt dish is tin-glazed earthenware.  Made in the London area between 1640 and 1700, it descended in family of Mayflower passenger Edward Fuller. The standing salt dish derives from the great salts used in medieval banquet halls, where to be seated "above the salt" was considered an honor. Salt was a very important condiment in the 17th century, used not only for flavoring but also for preserving food.
