This
was the residence of the Counts of Holland around 1200, before they moved their
residence to The Hague. It later became a prison and presently is part of the
Law School of the University of Leiden. Many Protestants, including the father
of Burgomaster Pieter van der Werff, a Mennonite minister, were martyred here
under the Inquisition. At the time it was illegal to sing psalms in public.
