"Of course it was Thanksgiving. The snow was beating against the windows, sifting in
under the door, and drifting across the roadway. At the rate it was falling and
drifting, the railroads would be blocked before night. No matter, Uncle Peter and
Aunt Susan had arrived by the morning train; Uncle Fred and Aunt Maria, with Cousin Will
and the twins, had come over in the wagon; and everybody that was not wanted to cook the
dinner had been to church and returned, stamping off the snow at the doorstep, as hungry
as hunters."
