One Small Candle Education Programs:
Museum programs designed for students and families

"...one small candle may light a thousand..."
William Bradford, 1630

Due to the global corona virus pandemic, all group tours are suspended until further notice.  We look forward to reopening our doors to you in the future!

Guided tours are offered to schools and other large groups, but must be reserved in advance by contacting Group Tours at (508) 746-1620, ext. 4 or by email at visit-us@pilgrimhall.org. Education Programs are designed for audiences of all ages. We provide age-appropriate activity sheets for students at every grade level, as well as for adult and senior learners.

Class size: Up to 25 children per group.
If combined with Imagine That!, 2 groups may be scheduled concurrently; please allow 1 to 1 1/2 hours for the combined program.

What did the Pilgrims take to the new world? If you were sailing away from home on the Mayflower, what would you take? In this imaginative and creative hands-on activity, primary school classes explore the contents of a "Pilgrim Trunk." The Mayflower Trunk can be combined with Imagine That! for a complete museum experience designed for our youngest visitors.

Look at that!
Kindergarten - Grade 3
Time: 30-45 minutes 30-45 minutes
Class size: Up to 25 children per group.
If combined with the Mayflower Trunk, 2 groups may be scheduled concurrently; please allow 1 to 1 1/2 hours for the combined program.

Each youngster is given activity sheets which introduce the museum experience. As they explore the museum, beginning readers find and investigate the artifacts illustrated. Simple drawing activities encourage close inspection. For example, how does a sailing ship look?

What's that? Grades 4-6 and Imagine that! Grades 7-9
Time: 1 hour minimum 1 hour minimum
Class size: Up to 30 students per group; 2 groups may be scheduled concurrently. Larger groups may reserve consecutive times.

Clues on activity sheets lead middle schoolers on a hunt to unlock the secrets of Pilgrims and Native Americans and how they lived. Finding the artifacts is just the first step! Students then decide their worth, beauty, and utility. Choices can be thought-provoking. Which was more useful, a halberd or wampum?

Think of that!
Grade 9 - adult
Time: 1 hour minimum
Class size: Up to 30 students per group; 2 groups may be scheduled concurrently. Larger groups may reserve consecutive times.

This guided program involves groups in a deeper understanding of the Pilgrim experience. Primary sources, such as maps and documents, are used. Participants draw conclusions about life in Plymouth by comparing and contrasting the written word with the artifacts of the Pilgrims.
