Students
will explore the financing of early Plymouth and learn how
the laws of supply and demand affected the early American
colonial economy as they follow the process from raw
materials (beaver skins) to the finished goods (expensive,
sought-after English-made beaver hats).
Activities
such as brainstorming on economic issues past and present,
discussing readings from Bradford and other 17th century authors,
engaging in "critical thinking " exercises, writing
short essays, creating and acting out skits, solving bartering and
math problems, and designing their own currency will encourage
students to recognize the complexity of historical cause and
effect. All the activities, plus the additional enrichment
and challenge exercises, are based on primary sources of 17th
century Plymouth Colony, augmented by visuals and maps from the
collections of Pilgrim Hall Museum.
