Educational material from
Pilgrim Hall Museum

Teacher’s guides containing primary source material, illustrations, maps and learning activities designed to supplement the study of Pilgrim history.

The Pilgrims &
the Fur Trade:

A curriculum unit for grades 5-7.
Published in cooperation with the General Society of Mayflower Descendants
47 single-sided pages, punched and packaged in shrinkwrap with its own 3-ring binder.
Cost: $10
Students will explore the financing of early Plymouth and learn how the laws of supply and demand affected the early American colonial economy as they follow the process from raw materials (beaver skins) to the finished goods (expensive, sought-after English-made beaver hats).
Activities such as brainstorming on economic issues past and present, discussing readings from Bradford and other 17th century authors, engaging in "critical thinking " exercises, writing short essays, creating and acting out skits, solving bartering and math problems, and designing their own currency will encourage students to recognize the complexity of historical cause and effect.  All the activities, plus the additional enrichment and challenge exercises, are based on primary sources of 17th century Plymouth Colony, augmented by visuals and maps from the collections of Pilgrim Hall Museum.
