What's new from Leiden? |
News from Dr. Jeremy
Dupertuis Bangs, Director |
| The remains of the Church of Our Lady
(Vrouwekerk) are threatened with demolition. The
Vrouwekerk was the church of the French-speaking Huguenot community in Leiden. This
community and the Pilgrim Separatist community shared a similar Reformed faith. Some
members of the Pilgrim community worshipped at the Vrouwekerk before their voyage on the Mayflower
and there were Huguenots among the Pilgrims in early Plymouth Colony. The demolition
of the remains of the Vrouwekerk, approved by the Leiden City Council, has been stayed due
to international publicity and attention. This stay is only temporary, however, and
this historic church, one of the few tangible remains of the Pilgrims' sojourn in the
Netherlands, is at grave risk. If you would like to join the effort to save the
Vrouwekerk, please log on to www.ucc.org. For more
